Reflecting on your spark of purpose

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by marketing, unsure how to attract clients and students, or resistant to “selling” your services, it might be time to shift your approach. Instead of focusing on tactics – social media posts, SEO, email funnels – let’s take a step back.

Why are you doing this in the first place?

This question is the heart of authentic marketing. When you start with why, you create a brand, message and marketing strategy that aligns with your values, resonates with your audience and feels good to share.

What does ‘start with why’ mean?

The concept of starting with your why comes from Simon Sinek’s well-known TED Talk and book Start With Why. The idea is simple: successful businesses and inspiring leaders don’t just focus on what they do or how they do it. They begin with their why – their deeper purpose, belief or motivation.

As a yoga teacher or wellbeing business owner, your why isn’t just about offering classes or treatments. It’s about the transformation you bring to people’s lives.

Think about your own wellbeing journey. What sparked your passion? What keeps you going? The answers to these questions are the foundation of your marketing.

Why your why matters

Your why is more than just a nice idea – it’s a practical tool that shapes your brand, messaging and business decisions. In our Marketing Mindshift process (get the free guide when you sign up to our email list), step 1 is all about clarifying your why. If you’re not clear on why you’re doing this, marketing will always feel difficult.

Ask yourself:

  • Why did I start (or am I thinking of starting) this business?
  • Why am I passionate about my offerings?
  • Why do I believe people will engage with my brand?
Let your WHY be your compass

Your why acts as your compass. When marketing decisions feel overwhelming, you can return to this foundation and ask: Does this align with my values? If something feels off, it probably is.

How to start with why in your business

Once you’ve clarified your deeper motivation, you can use it to guide different aspects of your business. Here’s how starting with why applies to key areas:

1. Your business vision and brand strategy

Your why helps you define your brand values, mission and purpose. Ethical businesses naturally reflect the personal values of their founders, so getting clear on what matters to you will shape the kind of business you build.

Start by identifying 3-5 core values that are central to your work. For example, these might include:

  • Authenticity – staying true to yourself in your business.
  • Compassion – supporting your students and clients with kindness.
  • Growth – helping people evolve physically, mentally or spiritually.

Once you have your values, let them guide your branding, from your logo to your website’s tone of voice.

Clarify your WHY

Real-life example

At Wildheart, we know from experience that starting with your why is critical to the success of your business. That’s why we always recommend new clients, particularly startups, start their journey with our Brand Strategy Package

This is the best way to clarify your purpose, goals, brand values and messaging. Many of our clients describe it as business therapy, as you get to understand yourself and your brand on a deeper level. The brand strategy document we create provides an invaluable roadmap for your marketing moving forward and helps you to consistently align all your marketing activities with your values.

It’s crazy to launch into a new website without this clarity…

"I found the Brand Strategy Package so worthwhile and eye-opening. Hannah and Guy guided me through a process that helped me really understand myself, my motivations, my business, my expectations and hopes so much better. It seems crazy to launch into a new website without the clarity this brings.” – Danette Watson

2. Your messaging and web copy

Your why should be woven into your website, bio and marketing messages. Instead of listing services, focus on why you do what you do.

Try this simple formula:
I help [who] ______ to achieve [what] ______ so that they can [what] ______.

For example:
“I help busy professionals reduce stress through yoga so they can feel more balanced and energised in their daily lives.”

This statement makes your purpose clear and speaks directly to your ideal clients or students.

Real-life example

At Wildheart, when we deliver our New Website Package, we always include a ‘business one-liner’ as standard. This is a compelling, concise message that underpins all your marketing efforts. It should clearly convey the pain point your audience faces, what you offer to help them and how it makes their lives better, and should be the first message visitors see when landing on your homepage.

For example, the one-liner we created for Space Yoga Studio was:

Looking for a more peaceful life?
Our accessible approach to yoga empowers you
To create the space you need

And the one-liner we created for Anahata Health Clinic was:

Would you like to experience glowing health?
Our community of alternative practitioners
Will help you shine again

3. Your content and marketing

When you start with why, marketing becomes less about “selling” and more about sharing. Whether you’re writing a blog, posting on Instagram or sending an email, let your why be your guide.

Ask yourself:

  • How does this content reflect my deeper purpose?
  • Does it educate, inspire or help my audience in a meaningful way?
  • Does it align with my values?

By focusing on why rather than what, your marketing will feel more authentic and attract the right people.

How to apply this mantra

Ready to put start with why into practice? Here are 3 simple steps to integrate this mindset into your business:

  1. Write down your why – Spend 10-15 minutes journaling about why you do what you do. Look for common themes and refine them into a clear statement.
  2. Review your messaging – Check your website, social media bio and marketing materials. Do they clearly communicate your why, or are they focused only on what you offer?
  3. Use your why as a filter – Next time you’re making a business decision (e.g. launching a new service, redesigning your website or creating content), ask: Does this align with my why? If it doesn’t, adjust your approach.

Start with why, and marketing becomes easier

Marketing shouldn’t feel like a struggle. When you start with why, everything falls into place – your brand, messaging and content all become natural extensions of your passion. You’ll attract students and clients who align with your values, and your marketing will feel more effortless and enjoyable.

So, take a deep breath, return to your why, and let that be your guiding force.

Authentic Marketing in Action
  • You might be wondering...

Before we wrap up, here are a few common questions we hear about starting with your why — to help you put this mantra into practice and stay aligned with what truly matters in your business.

How do I actually find my why?

Start by reflecting on why you do what you do — beyond earning a living. Think back to what first inspired you to teach, coach or create. What do you love most about helping people? Your “why” often sits right there — in the change you want to make in others’ lives.

What if I’m still figuring out my values?

That’s totally okay — most people are! Try listing words that describe how you want your business to feel. Then narrow them down to three that really resonate. You’ll be surprised how much clarity that simple exercise can bring.

Do I have to share my personal story in my marketing?

Not everything — just the parts that feel authentic and relevant. Sharing snippets of your journey helps people connect with you as a real person, not just a brand. It’s about being open, not exposed.

What if my values don’t seem “business-like”?

Perfect. The more human your values are, the more memorable your brand becomes. Kindness, curiosity and integrity are just as powerful as strategy or success — in fact, they often are the strategy.

How can I tell if something aligns with my why?

Pause before making a decision — big or small — and ask: Does this feel true to what I stand for? If the answer’s no or even “not sure,” it’s worth reconsidering. Your intuition is a powerful business tool.

What if my why changes over time?

That’s completely natural. As you grow, your purpose can evolve too. The key is to stay curious and keep checking in with yourself. Your marketing should grow with you, not lock you into the past.
