How an abundant mindset helps you grow your spiritual business

The inner conflict

Imagine you’re leading a retreat. Early morning light is spilling into the room. You’ve just guided your group through a nourishing practice. Everyone’s smiling that soft, grounded smile – the one you know so well. You feel connected, purposeful, alive.

And then your brain trips on the same old snag:

  • “Should I really be charging for this?”
  • “Is it spiritual to make money from helping people?”
  • “If I were truly humble, wouldn’t I give more for free?”

It’s a familiar tug-of-war for so many ethical entrepreneurs – especially those running yoga or wellbeing businesses. We want to lead with compassion, generosity and service. But we still have bills to pay, venue hire to cover, websites to run, bodies to feed, children to raise and communities to support.

Somewhere along the way, our culture quietly fused the idea of “spiritual” with “self-sacrificing”, and “self-sacrificing” with “financially struggling”. But what if that’s all just… conditioning?

What if the key to helping more people – sustainably, joyfully, wholeheartedly – starts with cultivating an abundant mindset?

Welcome to Marketing Mantra #4: Abundance begins within.

Thrive, don't just survive

You don’t have to be poor to be spiritual

There’s a big old myth out there that says you can either be spiritual or wealthy, but not both. That somehow struggle is more noble, more authentic or more aligned with the yogic path.

But it’s not that black and white.

You don’t become more spiritual by being poor.
You don’t become less spiritual by being financially stable.

Being broke isn’t a badge of honour.
It’s just… being broke.

As we talked about in our first Marketing Mantra post, Here’s what happens when you finally ask for help, the first thing people often say is, “But how will I afford it?”

Because the moment you start imagining support – a designer, a mentor, a marketing expert – your brain often panics. If you’ve read our second Marketing Mantra post, Start with your why, hopefully you’ve gained some clarity. Our third Marketing Mantra post, Find your tribe, reminds you that community matters too.

But community, support, growth… All of this can sound expensive.

And so the “spiritual = poor” story creeps right back in.

Let’s correct a misquote that changed everything

People often say, “Money is the root of all evil.” But that wasn’t the original quote. It’s been changed over time to carry a very different meaning.

The original quote was:

“A love of money is the root of all evil.”

A love of money – obsession, greed, hoarding – not the money itself.

Money is neutral. Money is energy. Money amplifies whatever values you already have.

For conscious business owners, like yoga teachers, therapists, meditation coaches and energy workers, money doesn’t corrupt your mission. It fuels it.

So what does our modern misquote say about society?

It says many people are deeply uncomfortable with money, especially in spiritual spaces. It says we’re conditioned to believe that wealth is suspicious and purity equals lack. And it says we need to rewrite this belief if we want to create a positive impact without burning ourselves out.

How we get in our own way

Here’s the sticky truth: Your belief system might be blocking the very abundance you’re trying to create.

When you carry stories like:

  • “People like me don’t earn much.”
  • “I don’t need money, I just want to help.”
  • “If I charge too much, people will judge me.”
  • “I shouldn’t profit from wellbeing.”

…you unknowingly cap your own expansion.

You limit how many people you can serve. You restrict how deeply you can give. You shrink your ability to grow.

This is exactly why step 2 of our Marketing Mindshift guide focuses on shifting your relationship with money, energy and spirituality. It reminds us that:

“Being spiritual doesn’t mean being poor… running a business means being profitable enough to thrive and support others.”

Let’s reframe: More money = more abundance

Track back to your WHY. You probably didn’t start your wellbeing business to get rich. You started it because:

  • you want to help people,
  • you have lived experience to share,
  • you found healing and want to pass it on,
  • you believe community changes lives.

Your WHY is rarely about money.

But here’s the paradox: To help more people, you need more money.

More money means:

  • you can hire childcare so you can teach more classes,
  • you can pay for studio space,
  • you can invest in a website that actually converts,
  • you can work with a brand strategist who understands your mission.
  • you can bring in support rather than burning out doing everything yourself.
More money, more impact

Money expands your impact. Money fuels your purpose. Money enables you to give more generously.

Giving back with gratitude

As Guy, Wildheart’s founder, beautifully puts it:

Wildheart Founder, Guy Anderson

"Personally, when I get to pay people I've been working with, because they're part of my tribe, I feel a sense of gratitude that I can give something back for all the hard work they've done."– Guy

Imagine being able to pay the people in your tribe – your designer, your photographer, your VA – not just fairly, but generously. Imagine becoming a source of abundance in your community.

That’s an abundant mindset in action.

Money is just energy

Money is energy. You get to direct its flow.

In yogic philosophy, everything is energy. Thoughts. Actions. Intentions. And yes – money.

Energy needs movement. Energy wants flow.

When you hold onto scarcity beliefs, you constrict the channels through which abundance can move. When you shift your mindset, everything starts expanding outward instead of shrinking inward.

That’s why cultivating an abundant mindset helps create:

  • more gratitude,
  • more generosity,
  • more spaciousness,
  • more sustainability,
  • more alignment.

Bring this same gentle, mindful awareness you use on the mat (or cushion or chair or massage room) into your business. Notice the stories. Notice the contractions. Shift them, breathe into them, transform them.

Your business will feel it. Your students and clients will feel it. Your bank account will feel it too.

Changing a lifelong belief

When our Content Queen Hannah recently read a letter she’d written in her early 20s to her mum who was travelling in India at the time, she realised she’d had the same script running pretty much all her life, and knew something had to shift.

Hannah Moss, Content Queen

"I was so shocked that almost the entire letter revolved around money – how I didn’t have enough, how I was worrying about what I could afford, how I felt about having to ask relatives for a loan. It made me realise that almost nothing has changed in 30 years! I don't want money to be at the root of all my worries and fears, so I’ve started working to change my mindset to a more abundant one. Enough is enough!" – Hannah

How to cultivate an abundant mindset

Here are some practical ways to start shifting your money mindset towards abundance:

  1. Check your stories: Notice the thoughts that pop up when you talk about money. Do you feel guilt, fear or resistance? These stories usually come from old conditioning, not your current reality. Awareness is the first step towards change.

  2. Reframe your beliefs: When you catch a scarcity thought (like “I can’t afford help”), try flipping it. What if the truth is “Support helps me grow” or “Investing in my business expands my impact”? Small reframes create powerful shifts.

  3. Track your wins: Every time money flows into your life – a new student, a workshop booking, even a £5 refund – write it down. Seeing evidence of abundance strengthens your trust in it.

  4. Celebrate circulation: Instead of worrying when money goes out, practise gratitude. Paying your VA? Thank you. Investing in your website? Thank you. As Guy says, giving back to your tribe is part of the abundance cycle.

  5. Practise asking for support: Whether it’s hiring a designer, booking a coaching call or delegating admin, asking for help signals to the universe (and yourself) that you’re ready to expand.

  6. Anchor into your why: Remind yourself that earning more doesn’t dilute your purpose; it strengthens it. The more stable you are, the more people you can help.

  7. Visualise an abundant future: Imagine your business thriving, your calendar balanced, your offerings valued and your impact growing. Visualisation helps your nervous system acclimatise to abundance instead of resisting it.

Absolutely. Money is simply the energy exchange that allows you to keep serving others sustainably.

Won’t charging more alienate my community?
